Details: NUS Sudoku Competition 2012 is an annual event organized by the NUS Mathematics Society. In this competition, participants would get to solve different kinds and variants of Sudoku puzzles. The main objective of this event is to raise the awareness and interest of Sudoku among all NUS students and enable them learn more of an application of Mathematics in real life.
Rules and Regulations for the two rounds:
Round 1 –:
Each participant would be given 3 puzzles, ranging from easy to medium difficulties, to solve.
The time limit for this round is 20 minutes.
The score of the individual participants would be determined by the total number of squares that they have answered successfully.
Participants will be given 1 point for each correct square solved.
Each completed puzzle will entitle the participants to an extra 5 points.
Time bonus of 5 points per minute left rounded down would be given to participants who have managed to solve all 3 puzzles correctly within the stipulated time limit. E.g. if a participant has 1.5 minutes left, he will only be given 5 points.
Once the time limit is up, no participant should write anything on his/her paper. Anyone caught doing so will be given a 10 point penalty.
Round 2 –:
Each participant would be given 9 different puzzles, of varying difficulties and variants to choose from, mainly 2 easy, 2 medium and 2 hard normal Sudoku puzzles and 3 medium special Sudoku Puzzles.
The time limit for this round is 20 minutes.
They would be free to solve any number of puzzles in this round. Depending on the level of difficulties of puzzles that they have solved, they would be awarded different scores based on the difficulty of the puzzle. For example, they would be given 3 points for each correct square solved in the difficult puzzles, and they would be given 1 point for each correct square solved in the easy puzzles.
Besides the normal Sudoku, in the second round, there will be 3 other special types of Sudoku mainly, Jigsaw Sudoku, Sudoku X and Monster Sudoku to expose participants to Sudoku of other natures.
For the special puzzles, each square is worth 2 points and they are of medium difficulty.
Each completed puzzle will entitle the participants to an extra 5 points.
Thus, this round is a test of the participants’ puzzle solving skills and their strategies.
Time is not our concern here.
**Tie-breaker: In the event that there is a tie among the top three scorers after completing the 2 rounds, a new set of Sudoku of medium difficulty will be given for the parties concerned to solve within 5 minutes. Either the highest number of correct squares solved within the 5 minutes or the fastest person to solve the puzzle will be used to decide the final positions. At the end, the total scores for the two rounds will be totaled up and the top 10 positions will be determined. Prizes:

1st Runner Up: Trophy + Stationary Set
2nd Runner Up: Trophy + Book Prize
Top 10 participants will be given a certificate of Merit each
